Anthony, Ajax, 23/2022

Manchester United have completed the signing of Anthony from Ajax in a €100m deal, finally meeting Erik ten Hag’s primary attacking target.

The Red Devils have always been interested in the Brazilian, and they previously witnessed the rejection of a €80 million offer, but the move was eventually paid after the player officially asked to leave.

Anthony is a player with many great moments, which is why Ajax demanded such a high wage, so what is his best in red and white Ajax?

Here are five of the most memorable.

the first goal

That’s Anthony’s first goal for Ajax – it’s not the most memorable, but it was a sign of things to come, and it came against Sparta Rotterdam in an away match.

Early in the 2020/21 season, Anthony cut inside from the left and with the help of a large skew, the ball went into the net, opening the Brazilian’s account with the club.

Over the course of his stay at Ajax and tournament days, more of these will follow, comparisons to Arjen Robben for his similar style and shooting.

Shehab Champions League

The 2020/21 season was seen as a season in which Anthony would settle, in the following campaign he was seen as a start and took over the right-wing position in Eric Ten Hag’s team.

The Champions League was his stage to shine, and against Sporting in the opening match of the group stage, he tortured the left side and provided assists to Sebastian Haller and Stephen Burgess.

This was also a sign of things to come as Anthony would take part in the group stages of the Champions League that season, with the best of it facing a previous competition winner.

Dortmund is tormented

Borussia Dortmund were expected to be the favorites in both matches against Ajax, but the Dutch champions made it look easy, with many thanks for the way Anthony.

In the 4-0 win, he scored one goal, again cutting the right side and ending with the left, while also performing his usual trick.

He was most effective in the match in Germany, where he provided assists and participated strongly in Dortmund’s expulsion, with Ajax winning 3-1.

Derby champion

One way to make yourself the champion of any club is to score the winner against an old rival, and Anthony did just that against Feyenoord, scoring a famous win.

Feyenoord was 2-0 up at one point at the Johan Cruyff Arena, but Ajax’s return was a major final, and Anthony was there to score the winning goal in the 94th minute from Nicolas Tagliafico’s cross.

He proceeded to celebrate by taking off his shirt and showing it to the loving fans, creating an iconic image in Ajax’s most important win of the season.

hurray final

Coming into the 2022/23 season on the back of much transfer rumours, Anthony put on a standout display in Ajax’s first home game of the season against Groningen.

The trick remained, in addition to the decisive pass of Steven Bergwijn, with whom he formed a strong partnership, he also scored a goal, again, cutting into the right flank and finishing from a distance with his left hand.

That was his last game and his goal at Johan Cruyff’s court, and he will leave the same way he arrived: talent, skill, confidence and a lot to show.
