Manchester City are close to an agreement to sign Manuel Akanji from Borussia Dortmund

Manchester City is close to concluding an agreement with Borussia Dortmund for defender Manuel Akanji.

Negotiations between the two clubs are underway over a €17.5 million deal and there is optimism that an agreement will be reached.

Akanji, 27, has yet to appear for Dortmund this season and is in the final year of his contract.

City manager Pep Guardiola was asked earlier on Tuesday if he could definitively say Al Ittihad is finished in the transfer market and he replied, “I don’t know what will happen.”

City have four centre-backs in their squad already, but Aymeric Laporte has yet to make an appearance this season due to injury. Robin Dias, John Stones and Nathan Ake have been used by Guardiola so far this season, but the latter is also out due to injury.

Akanji joined Dortmund from Basel in 2019 and has been a regular in the first team since his arrival. He participated in 36 matches in all competitions last season.

However, the Swiss international has been pushed to the bottom of the Bundesliga club’s selection standings with summer arrivals Niklas Sule of Bayern Munich and Nico Schlutterbeek of Freiburg.
