Kalvin Phillips only cost £10m less than the Norwegian goal-fiend, the England international signed as cover for Rodri in defensive midfield, while two of Haaland’s former teammates arrived in the shape of centre-back Manuel Akanji for £15.75 and left-back Sergio Gomez, who had since moved to Anderlecht, for £11.7m
Ederson remains the undisputed first-choice in goal, but the opportunity to sign Stefan Ortega – owner of a Bundesliga second-best 128 saves last season – on a free proved to good to turn down.

Unusually for City, they actually made more money from player sales than they spent on acquisitions this summer. Raheem Sterling commanded the highest fee – £50.58m – when he left for Chelsea in search of more regular first-team minutes.
Gabriel Jesus and Oleksander Zinchenko both also left for London, joining Arsenal for a combined £78.48m. City might live to regret letting them go – the Gunners lead them by a point at the top of the Premier League standings.
From there it was fringe players who were allowed to leave, with Pedro Porro, Ko Itakura and Arijanet Muric, who were all farmed out on loan last season, finding more permanent solutions.
