Man City transfers: Every signing and sale for 2022-23

Erling Haaland, Man City, 2022-23

Manchester City were the envy of world football when they signed Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund for €60 million, but who else came and went at the Etihad this summer?

Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions also sold more than usual in the recent transfer window, but they have still made an undefeated start to their title defence.

Football Transfers looks at what exactly the Cityzens have done…

What players have Man City signed in 2022-23?

Player From Fee
Erling Haaland Dortmund £54m
Kalvin Phillips Leeds £41.1m
Manuel Akanji Dortmund £15.75m
Sergio Gomez Anderlecht £11.7m
Stefan Ortega Bielefeld Free

Haaland was also wanted by Real Madrid and Barcelona, but faither Alfie and recently deceased agent Mino Raiola have managed his career carefully, and City were seen as hi best next step. Ten goals in six games later and they look to have been right.

Kalvin Phillips only cost £10m less than the Norwegian goal-fiend, the England international signed as cover for Rodri in defensive midfield, while two of Haaland’s former teammates arrived in the shape of centre-back Manuel Akanji for £15.75 and left-back Sergio Gomez, who had since moved to Anderlecht, for £11.7m

Ederson remains the undisputed first-choice in goal, but the opportunity to sign Stefan Ortega – owner of a Bundesliga second-best 128 saves last season – on a free proved to good to turn down.

Oleksandr Zinchenko Arsenal £31.5m

Unusually for City, they actually made more money from player sales than they spent on acquisitions this summer. Raheem Sterling commanded the highest fee – £50.58m – when he left for Chelsea in search of more regular first-team minutes.

Gabriel Jesus and Oleksander Zinchenko both also left for London, joining Arsenal for a combined £78.48m. City might live to regret letting them go – the Gunners lead them by a point at the top of the Premier League standings.

From there it was fringe players who were allowed to leave, with Pedro Porro, Ko Itakura and Arijanet Muric, who were all farmed out on loan last season, finding more permanent solutions.
