Leicester City rejected an improved offer from Chelsea for defender Wesley Fofana, the athlete Understood.
The latest proposal is believed to have been delivered this week but Leicester immediately rejected it.
Chelsea’s bids are believed to have been very conditional, so the overall price achievable is not necessarily what Leicester would have realistically been able to get.
Chelsea are currently thought unwilling to go beyond £70m including add-ons. If that is the case, Leicester, who are said to be seeking the more than £80m payout they took from Manchester United for Harry Maguire in 2019, will need to decide whether to make concessions.
At the moment there is no argument that the players are going in the opposite direction.
Chelsea had previously made two offers for the French defender but both fell below Leicester’s rating.
Brendan Rodgers has left Fofana out of Leicester’s squad after their 2-1 loss to Southampton on Saturday after he asked not to play.
Rodgers said before the match that Fofana had been left out because he was not “in the right mental state” to join his teammates.
“I mentioned in the week about playing a Premier League game and maybe one or two players are not in the right state of mind, you can’t stand them and certainly we can’t,” Rodgers told NBC.
“So that’s the reason for the change.”
Fofana has played 37 Premier League games since signing for Leicester from French side Saint-Etienne for £36.5m.
The defender affected during his first season at King Power Stadium, but his 2021-22 campaign suffered a broken leg sustained in a pre-season friendly against Villarreal.
