Alexis Sanchez is set to join Marseille on a free transfer after an agreement is reached

Chile international Alexis Sanchez is set to join Marseille on a free transfer.

The French side announced, on Tuesday evening, that it had reached an “initial deal” with the 33-year-old, who terminated his contract with Inter Milan earlier this month.

The attacker still needs to complete a medical examination.

Sanchez, who has 143 caps for Chile, previously enjoyed spells with Barcelona, ​​Arsenal and Manchester United.

He joined Inter on a free transfer from United in 2020, after a successful loan spell in Italy in 2019-20.

Sanchez played 27 Serie A games last season under Simone Inzaghi but only seven games, scoring five league goals during the season.

A Marseille statement read: “Olympique de Marseille and Alexis Sanchez have agreed to a transfer in principle.

“The Chile international, who has played 143 caps and won 17 titles in his career, will commit himself to Olympique in the next few hours after passing his medical tests.”

Marseille has already signed 11 players in this window, including the deals of Matteo Guendouzi, Arsenal player, Nuno Tavarez (on loan) and three players from Roma; Goalkeeper Pau Lopez, midfielder Jordan Veritot and winger Cengiz Ender.

They also added Polish international Ardeusz Milik and French international Jonathan Klaus.

Coach Jorge Sampaoli helped Marseille finish second in the Ligue 1 last season, but quit at the end of the season, replaced by Igor Theodor.
